- Japanese Koi Body Markings -
Body Markings are part of the way Koi are judged and valued as prize fish.

Hi "hee" - Hi is any red pattern on the body of a Koi. Millions of possible Hi combinations exist. In order to classify fish the color patterns are divided into "Steps." A step is defined by a color Hi that is unbroken and defined by deep pure color with edges that are crisp and not mottled into white or pearl.

Straight Hi

Straight Hi: A continuous Hi that wanders over the entire body. A 1 step Hi pattern.

Inazuma: Interconnected red Hi pattern that resembles a lighting bolt. A 1 step Hi pattern.

Nidan: Ni is two in Japanese: A 2 step Hi pattern. Two islands of red color that are not interconnected.

Sandan: San is three in Japanese: A 3 step Hi pattern. Three islands of red color that are not interconnected.

Shidan: Shi is four in Japanese: A 4 step Hi pattern. Four islands of red color that are not interconnected.

Godan: Go is 5 in Japanese: A 5 step Hi pattern. A Godan is rare.

- Koi Head Markings -

Kuchibeni Kuchibeni: Lipstick, red marking on the oral lobes or lips of the fish. Maruten Maruten: A Crown on the head. A reddish mark that extends from the head with more color on the body.
Menkaburi Menkaburi: A Hood on the head that travels from below and behind the head often extending to the mouth. Tancho Tancho: A Red Sun marking on top of the head. It is perfect if the spot is bright red and perfectly round. It should be centered on the lateral line of the fish.

RESTRICTED PLANTS: Some states have bans on certain pond plants. Check the USDA Noxious Plants website prior to purchase. The buyer needs to beware of any regulations on plants that may be restricted. If your order gets confiscated by your state agriculture department we cannot be held responsible.

CLIMATE VARIATIONS: We guarantee our plants will arrive alive and healthy. Pond Plants grow differently depending on where you live. If you took pond plants of the same type, and planted them in different parts of the USA, each plant would grow differently. This is Mother Nature at work. We cannot guarantee that your climate will support long term growth as this varies by location. With experience you will find which pond plants thrive in your USDA Zone. Join our Pond, Watergarden and Plant Forum and ask some questions before you buy is the best advice we can give you.

SUBSTITUTIONS: We reserve the right to substitute Out of Stock plants of equal or greater value unless you specifically request otherwise in the remarks section of your order you submit. We try our very best to update the website availability and show plants that are Out of Stock.
